A painkiller injection into Justin Herbert's fractured rib cartilage will be decided after his team's warm-ups Sunday before the Jaguars game, ESPN reports.

Coach Brandon Staley described Herbert as “day-to-day” on Friday and former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said, “It stinks.”

The special padding will help, Hasselbeck said on ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown," but Rex Ryan was outspoken.

The defenders would try to make Herbert "uncomfortable" and Ryan added, "He's not playing this week if he's my franchise quarterback.

Using ultrasound guidance, Herbert's injection will avoid hitting a lung, a known risk when this kind of procedure is performed.

Tyrod Taylor, then the Chargers' quarterback, had his lung punctured by a painkilling injection in 2020. Since then, Taylor has sued the Chargers.
